The introduction of SIP brings the challenge of protecting the network from an untrusted network, and the opportunity to manage the routing of calls to a degree not possible with traditional telephony. This installment of our continuing Knowledge Base will review how an Ingate Enterprise Session Border Controller (E-SBC) can address both the challenges and opportunities.

 
 

Multiple SIParator Distribution

 

 

In many scenarios having multiple Ingate SIParators, spreading the SIP traffic between multiple E-SBCs, provides critical benefits.  This multiple SIParator distribution increases the size or scale of the deployment beyond the capacity of one single unit, enabling very large-scale deployments.  It also provides a resilient and fault-tolerant network.   

 

Multiple SIParator distribution is when several Ingate SIParators are deployed to manage all of the traffic from the public Internet to a SIP server located on a secure LAN.  There are two methods for providing this capability to the Ingate SIParator.  First is by utilizing the service location capabilities within a Domain Name System (DNS) Service Record (SRV).  Second is by having an Ingate SIParator act as a primary SIP Proxy server to distribute the SIP traffic over multiple SIParators.

 

One customer Ingate is working with – a healthcare facility with multiple satellite offices – uses this architecture to protect the network against failover.  One SIParator is designated as being a "fallback" server, which will only be used if the primary server fails.  This can ensure that mission-critical applications such as voice are always available.  The backup server

might be a machine in another physical location, presumably not vulnerable to anything that would cause the primary host(s) to become unavailable.

 

Utilizing multiple SIParators also allows for a cost-effective scalability for larger deployments. 

 

In the situation with an Ingate SIParator acting as a proxy server, this proxy server is being used as SIP-level router that is forwarding SIP requests and responses to distribute the call flow over several other SIParators.  The SIParator SIP proxy is employing routing logic that is typically more sophisticated than just automatically forwarding messages based on a routing table.  The SIParator can perform the same load balancing function in either direction.
